Top-down development: define and design the look and feel of the site, the conform to that particular design
Bottom-up development: the look, feel and functionality of s site emerges as the various user scenarios are developed from the user's point of view.
Development phases:
- Conceptualization
Includes vision and strategy for the site. - Design visualization
The process of preparing the transactional, navigational and hierarchical construction of content. Mindmaps, storyboards and flow charts are used in this phase. - Analysis
The process of testing concepts for achieving the site vision. - Production
Includes the creation of all content and usability testing. - Evolution
The process of refining and updating.
The vision statement should include a value and a measurable goal
«We will become the world's preeminent Internet book retailer, selling $1 million in books per day by the turn of the century»
A Metaphor suggests a likeness or preexisting with other things or experiences. The most common representations used by web-sites are brochures, prospectuses and catalogs - all metaphors of the print medium.
Be careful when using metaphors when designing. What you might think represent something to you, might not be understandable to others.
