Book 2 Ch.10 Standards Organizations
Internet governing bodies:
- Internet Society (ISOC)
Heads the groups responsible for Internet infrastructure standards. - Internet Architecture Board (IAB)
A technical advisory group that conducts research and makes recommendations to ISOC. Defines rules and standards for Internet operations. IAB is responsible for appointing a chairperson to the IETF. - Internet Research Task Force (IRTF)
Is concerned with the evolution of the Internet and long term issues surrounding it. Is also concerned with Internet protocols and the future of the Internet. - Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
Is concerned with short term technical Internet issues and makes recommendations to the IAB for standards approval. One IETF task is the standardization of Internet languages such as HTML, JavaScript and XML. The IETF relies heavy on W3C recommendations. - World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
Headed by the father of HTML, Tim Berners-Lee, the W3C is focused on the World Wide Web and not the Internet. It deals mostly with creating recommendations for languages and technologies such as HTML, XML and CSS. It passes these recommendations to the IETF, which creates standards based on the recommendation. - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
Oversees the accreditation of domain name registrars. Is a nonprofit private sector organization that assumed responsibility for IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management and root server system management. These function were previously performed by Internet assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
Requests For Comments (RFC) is the responsibility of the IAB. RFCs are created to collect information on all types of Internet related issues. RFCs allow Internet users the opportunity to provide input concerning emerging standards. RFCs are references by ID numbers. The first few lines in an RFC declare its current state.
